Mouse Not Working But Light Is On (How to Fix)

It’s been a frustrating day; I was stuck in the middle of an important task when my computer mouse suddenly stopped working.

All the lights on it were still on, but it just wouldn’t move for some reason. So, I researched online and got it working back correctly.

In this article, I’ll show you why your mouse is not working and a few solutions to fix your mouse.

Let’s get started!

How to Fix Mouse Not Working But LIght Is On

These are methods that you should try to solve the problem with your mouse.

Disconnect & Reconnect

Firstly you can completely disconnect and reconnect the mouse to ensure the secure connection.

So, you should remove the mouse from the motherboard or Bluetooth and connect it back to the PC securely.

After connecting the mouse back to the motherboard, you should check and ensure if the problem is solved.

Swap Mouse

Sometimes your mouse might not be compatible with your PC, or your computer might have issues that cause you to run in this situation.

So, you should remove the mouse and plug it into the other device to check if the mouse works correctly.

On the other hand you can use another mouse to plug it into your PC to figure out the potential cause.

If your original mouse works with the other motherboard you might have faulty USB port, driver, or other hardware issues.

Clean Boot

While you are experiencing this error with your mouse you should put your PC into the Clean Boot to identify the reason.

Here is how you can clean boot your PC:

  1. Sign in your PC as administrator.
  2. In the search box type msconfig and select system configuration from the list of results.
  3. Next, on the services tab select hide all Microsoft services. > Select disable all > Then click apply.
  4. Then on the startup tab of system configuration, select Open Task Manager.
  5. On the startup tab in taskbar manager, for each enabled startup item, select the item and click disable.
  6. Then close the taskbar manager.
  7. Next, on the startup tab of the system manager click Ok.
  8. Now when you restart your PC is in a clean boot environment, and you can follow the on-screen instructions to solve the problem.

Update Driver

Sometimes this problem occurs on your device when you have an outdated or corrupted USB/mouse driver.

So, in this situation you should check your device’s USB driver version and ensure it is up to date.

If not you should install the latest updated version of the driver for your device to solve the problem.

Here is how you can do this:

  1. Click on the search bar from the taskbar and type device manager > and select device manager.
  2. Select category to see the name of device, then right click on that you want.
  3. Next, click search automatically for updated driver software.
  4. Click on the Update driver.
  5. Windows will scan for the driver update, if the driver is up to date you’ll see (the best version of driver is already installed on your device).

Repair From Boot Menu

Another method that has worked for several users is to repair the problem by selecting the repair option from the boot menu.

So, if you are unable to figure out the reason for this problem, you can enter the boot menu and select the repair option.

This will automatically scan for any software malfunctioning and then solve it to fix your device performance.

Here is how you can do this:

  1. Turn off your computer and switch it back on.
  2. Rapidly press the F8, F1, F2, or Delete key from the mouse while turning on.
  3. It will open the boot menu on your PC.
  4. From here you should press repair.
  5. It will automatically detect issues and solve them.

Hardware conflict

If you have recently added a piece of hardware to your computer, it might be preventing the muse from working.

A recently added hardware component might not be compatible with your device/mouse and interfere with the mouse.

So, you should remove the new hardware from the PC and check if your mouse works. If it still doesn’t work you can disconnect all external devices.

After removing the external devices; printer, USB flash drive, keyboard, or DVD plug your mouse into the motherboard to check if it is resolved.

Contact Manufacturer

If you’ve tried all the methods but are still unable to solve it, you should consider contacting the manufacturer customer support.
