USB Keyboard Not Working But Mouse Does (How to Fix)

I recently experienced the frustration of my USB keyboard not working, but my mouse was still functioning.

So, I decided to research online to figure out the reason for this problem. After a few hours I got my keyboard working back perfectly.

In this article, I’ll discuss some potential causes for why your keyboard isn’t working and offer possible solutions to fix it.

Let’s get started!

How to Fix USB Keyboard Not Working But Mouse Does

You should follow the below steps to solve your USB keyboard that isn’t working:

Unplug and Plug Again

The first and most common method that you should try is to unplug and replug the keyboard into the motherboard.

Sometimes the keyboard cannot be connected securely to your PC and it prevents the device from recognizing it.

So, you should carefully unplug it from the USB port and wait a few seconds. Then plug the keyboard back into the USB port firmly.

Faulty Keys

Another possible cause for this problem can be faulty keys of your keyboard. It is possible that the keys you are using/pressing are faulty.

So, the faulty keys lead you to the keyboard issue. So, you should check all keys from the keyboard to ensure whether a few keys are not faulty.

You can test your keyboard using offline/ online keyboard testing softwares. And check if one of the keys are functioning.

Check USB Port

When your USB keyboard isn’t working it can be caused by a malfunctioning USB port on your motherboard.

So, in this situation you should carefully inspect theUSB port and ensure it isn’t clogged or broken.

If you find a build up of dirt inside the port, you should clean it to solve the problem. In order to clean the USB port you can use compressed air, toothbrush or rubbing alcohol.

Check With Other Device

If the port is clean but the keyboard is still not working you should check it with your friend’s computer or another device if you have one.

If your keyboard works correctly with the other computer, it means that your computer isn’t compatible with that keyboard.

On the other hand you can check all other input USB ports from your computer. Plug the keyboard into each port individually and check if it respond.

Disconnect Power Cable Few Seconds

Another way you can power cycle your PC to resolve this issue. Power cycling will configure the minor problem with your keyboard and help you to get it working back.

First you should turn off your computer, then you should disconnect the power cable (for laptop remove the battery).

Hold down the power button for about 10 seconds, after that you can restart your computer and ensure it works.

If the keyboard is still not working you may have other reasons such as; software, hardware, or keyboard driver issues.

Update USB Driver

This issue also occurs when the USB driver is outdated or corrupted. In order to solve the problem you should update the driver

Note: For updating the driver you’ll need to use a mouse and keyboard, so you would ask your friend for one.

Here is how you can uninstall driver:
