Why Computer Runs Slower After Adding More RAM (Solved)

Have you ever upgraded your computer with more RAM, only to find that it runs slower than before?

It’s a common problem and one that I’ve experienced firsthand. From my own experience, I know how frustrating this issue can be.

In this article, we’ll explore why adding more RAM can cause your computer to run slower and what you can do about it.

Let’s dive in!

Why Computer Runs Slower After Adding More RAM

Why Computer Runs Slower After Adding More RAM

It is rare that adding new RAM causes your computer. However, this issue can be caused by a faulty RAM stick, mismatch of them or  incorrectly installed on the PC.

So, first you should inspect the RAM to ensure it isn’t faulty and working correctly. You can check your memory stick and ensure whether it is working.

In order to test or check your RAM you can manually add them individually into the memory slots on the motherboard, until you find a faulty one.

You can one by one insert the RAMs into the port, also you should try different ports from the motherboard to ensure they aren’t causing issues.

The next thing you should do is to inspect it to make sure it is properly seated into the memory slot.

You should check the memory stick whether it is plugged all the way into the port, otherwise you can re-establish the RAM connection.

In order to do so, you can remove the RAM from your system and then insert it back into the slot properly.

The Final cause for your computer to slow down on adding a new RAM is mismatching of the memory sticks.

As you’ve already installed 8GB RAM on your computer and then added 2GB stick, it will cause the PC to slow down instead of boosting.

Because these RAMs will try matching and working a 2* 4GB group. So, it’s essential to use RAM in an order such as 2* 4 GB or 2* 16 GB.

How to Know If RAM Is Faulty

There are several signs that you can use to ensure whether your RAM stick is faulty. Once you’ve ensured you are having issues with your RAM you can further troubleshoot it.

Here are a few signs of your your RAM failure:

So, the first common thing that can be an indication of a faulty/bad RAM is a slow/ freezing computer. If you are facing this issue on your computer it might have a low/dead RAM issue.

Your PC will stop working, freeze or work slowly randomly, you should look at your RAM stick and ensure they aren’t malfunctioning.

You can test them in the same way we’ve discussed earlier in this article; remove all RAMs and insert individually or in a pir until you find a defect.

Once you’ve a faulty memory stick you’ll be able to further troubleshoot or replace it with another one.

The next, most common indication is a Blue Screen of Death. It happens when your PC is unable to work or recover.

This issue can occur due to the low/faulty RAM, as your computer cannot read it and results in malfunctioning.

Another most common behaviour of your computer that is typically caused by RAM malfunctioning is lag, randomly turning on, or working slowly.

So, in this situation you can try using other RAM sticks if you have one. It will help you to know whether you are having issues with your computer or RAM.

So, if the RAM is low/dead one of them you should consider upgrading them. A 64 GB RAM will cost you about $70-100, according to make & models.

Why is my PC running slower with more RAM?

Adding too much RAM on your computer will jeopardise your device performance, when you’ve already had enough.

The new additional RAM will apply the law of diminishing return at a certain point and will not add much value in your PC performance.

Will more RAM help a slow CPU?

RAM is a temporary memory on your computer which helps it to access files and send instructions for output.

So, as much RAM you’ll have on the computer the files will be faster accessed to the CPU. so, as more RAM you have your computer will work as fast.

Is it better to have more RAM or a faster processor?

Both have their own benefits that include speed boost or ability to handle projects. A better processor will help you with tasks such as streaming, or multiple programs.

On the other hand a good RAM stick will help you in multitasking, and improve your device’s performance in complex programs.

Final Words

A computer cannot slow down due to installing new RAM, however this issue can occur due to a few reasons such as; incompatible RAM, improperly installed, or incompatible combination.

So, if you are having this issue you may need to check the installation process or replace them with a correct combination, or other compatible one.
